Detroit has been a vital city for over 300 years. In the latter years of the twentieth century, a striking and complex confluence of social and economic forces made the city into an emblem of urban decay. However, much remains to admire.
The fate of Detroit should concern us all; if we can find no way to accommodate waves of change and historical circumstance, racism, paranoia, and despair, then Detroit's troubles can only signal more difficult times ahead for the nation and the world.
As time allows, I'll post material here to explore the city's rich history and current glories.
On the photo page you'll find links to albums of photographs I've taken around the Detroit area. I snapped a few pictures of 1930s-era automobiles at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, adjacent to Detroit. The museum is near Ford's Rouge Plant, once the largest industrial complex in the world. I've added some pictures of the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle.
